The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and regulations create national standards to protect the privacy of your medical records and other personal health information held by doctors, hospitals, insurance companies, and other health care providers. It generally allows you to control access to your own health information and to find out how your information has been disclosed or used. It also sets limits on when and under what circumstances your health information can be disclosed without their consent.
