Disability Rights Pennsylvania Publishes 2024 White Paper on Transportation Accessibility and Employment Opportunities for Individuals with Disabilities

Disability Rights Pennsylvania (DRP) has released a comprehensive 2024 white paper, titled “Enhancing Accessibility: A Comprehensive Examination of Transportation Network Requirements for Inclusive Employment Opportunities,” which examines the critical role of transportation accessibility in fostering employment opportunities for Pennsylvanians with disabilities.

This report aims to ignite a dialogue among policymakers, transportation providers, and disability advocates on the steps needed to build an inclusive transportation infrastructure. It highlights key findings on barriers in Pennsylvania’s transit systems.  Transportation challenges such as unreliable transit services, accessibility gaps, and limited transportation options, particularly in rural areas impact employment opportunities for people with disabilities. The report also outlines actionable recommendations, including stronger accountability, updated rider-focused policies, and enhanced driver training on accessibility features.   Only 39.4% of individuals with disabilities are employed in Pennsylvania, compared to a national average of 40.7%.

Dale Verchick, a DRP Advocate said, “As National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) comes to a close, DRP is releasing this report to highlight how important accessible and reliable transportation is for people with disabilities.  We hope that this report will encourage policy makers to collaborate with the disability community in implementing solutions.  Together, we can increase access to community transportation and increase employment opportunities for Pennsylvanians with disabilities.”

As part of its advocacy, DRP encourages legislators, transportation providers, and other stakeholders to collaborate with organizations such as the PA Transportation Alliance and the Keystone Transportation Funding Coalition, which are actively working to secure equitable and reliable transportation options across the state.

Disability Rights Pennsylvania invites stakeholders and members of the community to review the full white paper, available here and join the effort to create an inclusive transportation network that empowers all Pennsylvanians to thrive.
