National Call In Day for ABLE Age Adjustment Act on July 26!

Friends-

To celebrate the 28th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, our community is rallying together to improve the ABLE Act with a national call in day! The Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Act passed into law in December 2014, allows individuals with disabilities the opportunity to save resources in a tax-advantaged savings accounts (ABLE Account to cover disability related expenses. We need your help to make some improvements and expand eligibility for ABLE Accounts!

Currently Congress is considering the ABLE Age Adjustment Act, S. 817 and H.R. 1874, which would increase the eligibility threshold for ABLE accounts for onset of disability from prior to age 26 to prior to age 46. Many individuals who could benefit from ABLE Accounts since many conditions can and do occur later in life, including multiple sclerosis or paralysis due to an accident. Even Veterans who acquire a disability due to their service after age 25 are currently ineligible for ABLE accounts. The resources saved in an ABLE account are not taken into consideration when determining eligibility for federally funded means tested benefits, including Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Medicaid.
According to a study from the National Association of State Treasurers (NAST), the long-term sustainability, availability, and affordability of ABLE programs are in doubt without an expansion of eligibility. Passage of the ABLE Age Adjustment Act is critical to significantly expanding the pool of eligible individuals who can open ABLE Account and ensuring that these individuals are eligible to save for their futures.
