Paving the Way for Federal Workplace Accessibility

We know workplace accessibility is not just a buzzword; it is a fundamental civil right that must be upheld.  A truly inclusive workplace ensures that people with disabilities can fully participate and contribute to the mission of their employer.

In December, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) released an article to provide an overview of the laws that federal agencies must comply with to provide people with disabilities accommodations to ensure full participation in the federal government workforce.

The article is in four sections.

Section one is an introduction to Presidential Executive Order 14035 and Section 501 of the Rehabilitation Act.  E.O. 14035 initiated a coordinated, governmentwide effort to ensure the federal workforce serves as a model for diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. Section 501 of the Rehabilitation Act created a legal obligation for the federal government to provide reasonable accommodations.

Section two focuses on the federal laws that require access to buildings, facilities, and physical spaces.

Section three focuses on Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act that requires federal agencies to make all their electronic and information technology accessibility to people with disabilities.

Section four lists additional resources available to help federal agencies comply with the law.

Workplace accessibility is a legal requirement.  If you are a federal employer, HR staff in the federal government, an applicant for a federal job, or a current federal employee, you should review and understand the guidance provided by the EEOC and the complaint process.
