Pennsylvania General Assembly Passes Bill for Court and Police Training

The General Assembly has passed House Bill 221, an important bill for training of the minor judiciary and police about intellectual disabilities, mental illness, and autism. The bill passed the House and Senate nearly unanimously, without amendment. Click here to read the bill.

The training required by HB 221 will help to minimize negative outcomes which at times occur when people with intellectual disabilities, mental illness, and autism have interactions with the criminal justice system. It is important that people with disabilities are provided with appropriate accommodations and options when there is law enforcement and court involvement.

Thank you to the Chairs of the House and Senate Judiciary Committees for this bipartisan effort on behalf of people with disabilities. Click here to read the press release of lead sponsor Representative Thomas Caltagirone.

We appreciate the General Assembly’s support of diversionary options for people with disabilities. Click here to find the contact information for your Representative and Senator so you can thank him or her.

We now ask the Governor to sign this important bill.
