President’s Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities
Last week, the White House announced President Biden’s picks for the President’s Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities. Included among the 20 newly appointed members is Temple University’s Shawn Aleong. Shawn is a self-advocate studying Legal Studies, Real Estate, and Finance. Shawn is also an intern at Disability Rights Pennsylvania.
The Committee was established by President Lyndon Johnson in 1966 and serves as an advisor to the President and the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services on issues related to persons with intellectual disabilities.
The Committee met under President Obama but not under President Trump. President Biden reestablished the Committee by Executive Order on September 30, 2021.
Over the years, the Committee has released reports on the direct support workforce crisis, improving technology access for people with intellectual disabilities, community inclusion, employment, and more.
