Christopher’s Journey: Finding Purpose Through Lived Experience
When Christopher started his role as a Certified Peer Specialist (CPS) four years ago, he wasn’t sure where the path would take him. As someone who has experienced mental health recovery and faced memory issues from a brain injury, his journey has had its challenges. Yet, with a combination of accommodations and a supportive work environment, Christopher has turned these challenges into strengths, all while helping others on similar paths.
One of the accommodations that has been vital for Christopher is the availability of mental health (MH) days. “It’s the most important thing,” Christopher explains. “You need to be well physically and mentally.” These days allow him to manage his anxiety and continue working effectively. His role is based heavily on lived experience, which he sees as a unique way to contribute meaningfully to his workplace.
“Mainly, it’s a supportive job,” he says, emphasizing how rare that can be. “A lot of jobs don’t do that.” This level of support has been critical for Christopher, not just professionally but personally as well. He shares that it’s more than just a job—it’s a community that encourages him to grow while supporting others. “I don’t know where I would be without my job.”
While Christopher acknowledges the importance of accommodations, he also encourages others to take steps towards financial independence. “Go to work! It’s not going to hurt your benefits, and you’ll learn how to manage money.” His job has provided him with the structure and financial empowerment he needed. “I’m a creature of habit at work,” Christopher notes, explaining how his income has become an essential part of his stability and self-reliance.
A significant part of Christopher’s journey toward employment was guided by Disability Rights Pennsylvania’s Protection and Advocacy for Beneficiaries of Social Security (PABSS) program. He credits the program with making him more comfortable about working toward employment as a goal. The PABSS program introduced him to the Ticket to Work initiative and benefits counseling, which gave him the tools and confidence to pursue employment without fear of losing his benefits. “Disability Rights PA helped guide me through the Ticket to Work program and benefits counseling. It made a huge difference, helping me feel comfortable to work towards employment.”
Looking back on his journey, Christopher is proud of how far he’s come. His role not only supports his mental health and cognitive challenges but also allows him to make a difference in the lives of others. “I pay so much out of my own earned income,” he says, underscoring his pride in financial autonomy and his sense of purpose through his work.
Christopher’s story is a powerful reminder of how critical it is for workplaces to offer support and accommodations, especially for individuals with disabilities. His journey showcases the importance of fostering environments where employees can thrive, both mentally and professionally, while contributing their unique experiences to the workplace.
