Service Member’s Eviction Stopped and Fair Housing Rights Enforced

Service member contacted DRP for assistance when facing threats of eviction in Cumberland County. A service member and her family rented an apartment with their two pets and a service animal. Prior to moving in the unit, the service member notified the building management and was informed that her pets would not be a problem. However, after the family moved in, they were told they would need to get rid of one of their pets to comply with the building’s two pet maximum rule or face eviction. DRP contacted the manager and explained that under the law, the service animal is not considered a pet, but rather, a medical device.  The manager retracted the violation and threat of eviction and approved the family’s living arrangement.
